Adaptations are changes that can be made to the home that make it easier and safer to do everyday tasks, and should provide an environment that enables and supports independent living. This allows individuals to remain connected with their families and support networks, but also allows for daily life to continue with as little restriction as possible.
It is about making physical changes to the layout, surfaces, openings or how things work in the home to enable people to move around but to also get in and out of the house easily.
Many properties were never designed with the elderly or disabled in mind and this provides an interesting and ongoing challenge of trying to meet the current needs of the relevant person- in existing homes, where possible.
Where the adaptation cannot be done in the existing footprint of the home, it may be that space is increased by building an extension for example. In some cases, re-locating to an alternative premises is sometimes the most viable option available. The alternative property will usually be one that is or can be adapted to meet your needs.
If works are being funded directly by your local Council or via Disabled Facilities Grant, an extension or relocating to a more suitable property will usually be a last resort - once all other options have been explored.
Where you are funding the project yourself you are free to decide what adaptations you need, where and how it will be done.
You maybe eligible and can apply for a grant (Disabled Facilities Grant) to cover the cost of works up to the value of £30,000. Please contact us here at Steinwall or your local Council for further information.
